You hear it all the time. Once Saved Always Saved, but is this a false teaching?

We will begin with one of the most used scripture on the subject of Once Saved Always Saved.

Romans 8:35 - 39 "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

  • First, we need to recognize that God loves us! God also loves the sinner! Nothing in this world or outside this world could ever separate us from His love. Out of love Jesus was sent to die for the sins of the world. He died for all people, the drunkard, drug addict, sex addict, satanist, self rightous etc; all people belong to Almighty God!

Nothing could ever separate us from His Love!

Romans 8:35 - 39 showed us God's love toward us, but not our love toward Him!

  • Let's now look at:
Ezekiel 18:4 "Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die."

  • Now we must remember that the soul that sins shall die. If we are once saved, then always saved, then we are saying that we can sin and still go to heaven, or that we have made it to perfection. There was only one perfect person and His name was Jesus. If you get saved and then your always saved you no longer need a savior, your perfect!
  • Going back to
Romans, this time chapter 6:1 - 23 "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

  • After coming to Christ (getting saved) we begin a new life, one without sin in our life. However, man is not perfect, he is a failure. (Isn't this why we need a Savior?) He or she could go back into sinning. You are not forced to be saved. You have the power of choice. Christians choose to serve the Lord. No one is making you do it. Not even God

  • Notice what the Bible says in 1 John 2:1-3 "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments."

  • We can sin after we have received the gift of salvation! But all we have to do is ask forgiveness through Christ and receive forgiveness. At that point we are back in a right standing with the Lord once again but only through Christ.

  • He said to keep His commandments!
Sin separates us from God. Isaiah 59:1-2 "Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear."

  • God loves us and will always love us all the way into hell if we choose to go the way of wickedness. God has given us a great power and that power is choice. You choose your destination and God will let you. Isn't this why the world is in a mess? It's not God's fault that man is greedy and power hungry and full of hate for one another. Man has a choice! God loves us so much He lets us choose to serve Him! We are not forced to serve Him! Christians want to serve Him. If I was once saved always saved it would no longer be a choice. There would be no way out! I would be saved even if I left God. God tells us of the back slider in Jeremiah 3:14,15 "Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:
15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding."

He says to turn to Him! Not to keep backsliding!

  • Paul talks about becoming a castaway. A castaway from what? "Heaven" my friend. We most assuredly can give up our salvation. Remember, it is a gift, you don't have to keep it. Paul explains to us that we are to strive for the mastery.

    1 Corinthians 9:24-27
"Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway."

  • One more scripture I would like to look at is:
Hebrews 6:1 - 9 "Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
3 And this will we do, if God permit.
4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
9 But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak."

  • We notice we are to go on unto perfection. (the fruits of the Spirit should be growing in you. Gal. 5:22-23) Next, not laying the foundation of fundamental truths you should have already learned and understood all over again. (grow up) Next, If onced enlightened, then that person falls away it is impossible to renew them again because they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh and bring Him to an open shame.
  • Notice: They fell away, this is separation from God. Then they bring Christ to an open shame. Rebellion. In a state of rebellion someone does not want to hear the gospel. This makes it impossible to renew them to their place they once were in Christ. At any time this person can ask forgiveness and come back to God. In no way does this scripture or any other scripture imply that they were never saved in the first place. The only sin there is no forgiveness for is blasphmey of the Holy Ghost.

  • Another scripture I would like to look at is: Phillipians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. We see here that we are to work out our own salvation (this gift from God) with fear and trembling. What does that mean? It means not to take your salvation for granted, but to work on keeping yourself saved. Do it carefully and cautiously, knowing that the slightest variation from the Word could mean disaster. In other words, just obey the Word of God! This doesn't mean to live in total fear of going to hell, but use common sense as Paul said in 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: So what do you do? You Honestly ask forgiveness and then go on in the Lord. Treat people (even the sinner) with respect and show the love of Christ to all people.
  • Many people have used the doctrine of once saved always saved to justify their sin thereby offending their brothers in the Lord and offending the young believer and not giving the sinner any salt. Jesus said, And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea. Mark 9:42 The world is watching us and if they see no change in us, then why should they change or even want to be changed?

    Finally
A scripture was quoted to me that if you don't take any other scripture into consideration would prove once saved always saved. However, since we are working with a false doctrine, it is easy to see the truth. The scripture is found in St. John 10:27-29 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

Once again we have a problem with the fact that this is a teaching that once your saved there is nothing you can do to change it. Notice: The key here is: "I know them" and "they follow me". If we look at Matthew 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
We see a group of believers who knew Him and they did many wonderful works for Him, but He did not know them! No man plucked them out of God's Hand. They got out on their own! They did it their way instead of God's way. They didn't want to stay saved by doing God's will but wanted to say they were saved so they could feel good about what they were doing, yet inside knowing that they were not putting God's will first. Once saved always saved is a false doctrine! I gave you a micro portion from the Word of God to prove this. Here are some scriptures to study on your own:

    • Ezekiel 33 (a righteous man)
    • Matthew 8:5-13 (Children of the kingdom)
    • Matthew 22:1-14 (Outer darkness)
    • Matthew 25 (Strong Reference)
    • Psalm 69 (Let them be blotted out of the book of the living)
    • Psalm 109 (Name blotted out)
    • Acts 3:19 ("Repent"-that your sins be blotted out)
    • Deuteronomy 29:1-20 (Name blotted out)
    • Revelation 3:1-6 (Christians not defiled-name not blotted out)
    • There are many many more verses to search out. God Bless!

  • "Seeking Signs"

As Last Days Believers we must be very careful about seeking after refreshings and revivals. The Word is clear that signs will follow the believer and not the believer following after signs. Jesus said a perverse generation seeks after a sign. So Called last days revivals have fooled some believers with serious hoxes called holy laughter, the presence of gold dust, and new gold teeth. Our church has been called a "cult church" for not believing these are from Almighty God. Christians run to get gold teeth, gold dust out of their hair and some laugh themselves into debt. If the Lord makes a way for me to get gold, then I want it in my bank account where it can do some good. Not on my head or in my mouth! I've heard many Christians say that laughter is like a medicine, yet the Bible actually states in Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. Notice: a merry heart (not laughter) doeth good like a medicine! A Christian that does not allow the pressures of life and the result of each day to bring them down will have a merry heart because their mind is stayed on the Lord! Next time you laugh, know what your laughing about!HOME
